
Just as unique as the grounds themselves is the history of the development of Bürgerpark. While in other cities parks and gardens were laid out for the diversion of the ruling class and were only later made accessible to the public, Bürgerpark, which literally translates to Citizens’ Park, developed through the commitment of the citizens themselves. The history of Bremen’s Bürgerpark begins with the formation of the “Comité für die Bewaldung der Bürgerweide“ (Committee for the Afforestation of Bürgerweide) 145 years ago. Parallel to the written history, there is the popular legend of “Countess Emma and the Cripple”, which describes how the plot of land called Bürgerweide (“Citizens’ Meadow”) came into the possession of Bremen’s citizens.
