In the 19th century it was customary in many public parks to set up animal enclosures for the entertainment of the visitors. In Bürgerpark, too, a pool for otters was already created 3 years after its establishment. However, since the animals are very shy and nocturnal, a decision was made at an early date to change over to native diurnal animal species able to withstand the local weather conditions.

Today numerous animals await visitors. Alpacas from South America can be seen as well as indigenous fallow deer. The mini-donkeys Leila and Pedro can often be heard from afar and the Bentheim Black Pied pigs feel right at home in Bürgerpark. For children the miniature goats and guinea pigs are, of course, the big attraction.
